Kidney
The structure herein is kidney obtained by the segmentation of the data from the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (MRI). The kidney comes from MRI of the healthy man at the age of 46. The model is pretty nice and precise although it doesn't reveal any internal structure when cutting in any plane. As the structure is not large (3,7 MB) and its size corresponds to the physiological kidney (maximum length is cca 13 cm), it is suitable to be printed on the smaller 3D printed and then used to demonstrate basic anatomy and rheology.
The kidneys are crucial organs for maintaining homeostasis in the body. They filter metabolic waste products and excess substances from the blood, which are then excreted as urine. This filtration process helps regulate fluid and electrolyte balance, ensuring stable concentrations of sodium, potassium, and other ions. The kidneys also play a key role in maintaining acid-base balance by excreting hydrogen ions and reabsorbing bicarbonate. Additionally, they regulate blood pressure through the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and produce erythropoietin, a hormone that stimulates red blood cell production in response to oxygen levels. Thus, the kidneys are integral to overall metabolic health and the body's internal equilibrium.
